Meniere’s disease

Treatment of Meniere’s disease

Consider prescribing a short course of treatment (7 days). If symptoms deteriorate, or do not improve after 5-7 days, reassess.

Prochlorperazine
Prochlorperazine 5mg tablets

5mg 3 times daily, increased if necessary to 30mg daily in divided doses, dose to be increased gradually.

Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets

One or two tablets twice a day.

Cinnarizine
Cinnarizine 15mg tablets

30mg 3 times daily.

Prescribing Notes:

  • Betahistine and thiazide diuretics should be reserved for prophylaxis in patients with a proven diagnosis of Meniere’s disease.
  • Long-term metoclopramide and prochlorperazine may cause tardive dyskinesia in the elderly.
  • OLDER PATIENTS: Prochlorperazine should not be prescribed for “dizziness” in older patients due to the risk of drug-induced parkinsonism, postural hypotension and mental confusion.
