Treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
To extend life in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, initiated by specialist experienced in the management of motor neurone disease. See prescribing notes for information on administration when patient is unable to swallow tablets.
Riluzole
Riluzole 50mg tablets
50mg twice daily.
Riluzole 25mg/5ml oral suspension sugar free
50mg twice daily.
Prescribing Notes:
- If patient is unable to swallow riluzole tablets the liquid preparation may be a suitable alternative. Alternatively, tablets may be crushed and mixed with a soft food product to aid swallowing although this is an off-label use. Care should be taken when using crushed tablets as they may produce a local anaesthetic effect in the mouth. For enteral tube administration liquid or crushed tablets dispersed in water may be used (off-label use).
- Riluzole is appropriate for shared care, refer to local board policies.
