Cinnarizine
Cinnarizine 15mg tablets
30mg 3 times daily.
Prochlorperazine
Prochlorperazine 5mg tablets
5mg 3 times daily, increased if necessary to 30mg daily in divided doses, dose to be increased gradually, then reduced to 5-10mg daily, dose is reduced after several weeks.
Prochlorperazine 3mg buccal tablets
One or two tablets twice a day.
Prescribing Notes:
- These products are only effective for labyrinthine vertigo.
- Prochlorperazine buccal tablets may be a suitable alternative for patients who are vomiting.
- Long-term metoclopramide and prochlorperazine may cause tardive dyskinesia in the elderly.
- OLDER PATIENTS: Prochlorperazine should not be prescribed for “dizziness” in older patients due to the risk of drug-induced parkinsonism, postural hypotension and mental confusion.
