Guidance on dental formulary recommendations

Specific East Region Formulary recommendations that relate to dental prescribing may be found in the Ear, Nose and Oropharynx chapter, as well and within the Dental and Ear, Nose and Oropharynx sections of the Infections chapter.

The Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) is an initiative of the National Dental Advisory Committee and part of NHS Education for Scotland (NES). The Programme provides user-friendly, evidence based guidance to support dental teams to provide high quality healthcare that is safe, effective and person centred. 'Drug Prescribing For Dentistry' 3rd Edition aims to facilitate drug prescribing within primary care dental practice.

Registered dentists are legally entitled to prescribe anything from the BNF. However, dental prescribing within the NHS is restricted to those drugs contained in the 'List of Dental Preparations' in Dental Practitioners formulary. This information is contained within the body of the BNF.

Dentists should prescribe within their competence and adhere to guidance from their local formulary committees. Prescribing advice specific to dental practice can be accessed at the SDCEP website. The SDCEP Dental Companion App is also available for Apple and Android devices.
