Prescribing Notes:
- Tolvaptan is a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist that slows the loss of kidney function in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, partly by reducing the rate of kidney cyst growth. These benefits are greatest in those patients at high risk of kidney decline as identified by strict clinical and imaging criteria. Tolvaptan is prescribed in secondary care but requires regular monitoring of liver function tests. Sick day rules are applicable and there are important interactions with antimicrobials that should be checked prior to new prescriptions.
