Alkalinisation of urine.
Potassium citrate + Citric acid

Prescribing Notes:
- Many patients obtain relief from the symptoms of cystitis with over-the-counter medicines (see Pharmacy First recommendations in the UTI section of the Infections chapter).
- Sodium bicarbonate is used as a urinary alkalinising agent in some metabolic and renal disorders.
- Ascorbic acid is not always reliable for acidification of urine. See the ‘Maintenance of catheters’ pathway for pH-modifying solutions for the maintenance of indwelling urinary catheters.
- Potassium citrate should be used with caution in the elderly as it may lead to hyperkalaemia if used for prolonged periods at high dosages.
- For information on the management of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) see the Infections chapter of the formulary.
