Prevention & treatment of postpartum haemorrhage
Oxytocin
Oxytocin 10units/1ml solution for injection ampoules

By intramuscular injection, 10 units.

Carbetocin
Carbetocin 100micrograms/1ml solution for injection pre-filled syringes

By slow intravenous injection, 100 micrograms for 1 dose, to be administered as soon as possible after delivery, preferably before removal of placenta.

Carbetocin 100micrograms/1ml solution for injection vials

By slow intravenous injection, 100 micrograms for 1 dose, to be administered as soon as possible after delivery, preferably before removal of placenta.

Tranexamic acid
Tranexamic acid 500mg/5ml solution for injection ampoules

As per specialist advice.

Ergometrine
Ergometrine 500micrograms/1ml solution for injection ampoules

By intramuscular injection, 500micrograms.

Carboprost
Hemabate 250micrograms/1ml solution for injection ampoules

By intramuscular injection, 500micrograms.

Ergometrine + Oxytocin
Syntometrine 500micrograms/1ml solution for injection ampoules

By intramuscular injection, 1ml dose.

Prescribing Notes:

  • Oxytocin (injection) is given by slow intravenous infusion for induction and augmentation of labour. It may also be used in the treatment of post-partum haemorrhage.
  • Carbetocin will only be used for prevention of post-partum haemorrhage for in-patients undergoing caesarean birth.  
  • Patients having carbetocin should not be given oxytocin for at least 4 hours after the dose. 
  • Syntometrine (oxytocin (5 units) and ergometrine maleate (500micrograms) in 1ml injection) is given by intramuscular injection for the routine management of the third stage of labour. It is also the drug of choice in the management and prevention of post-partum haemorrhage, and for the control of bleeding due to incomplete abortion.
  • Carboprost (injection) is used to treat post-partum haemorrhage in patients who do not respond to oxytocin
  • Ergometrine maleate (injection) is used for the management of post-partum haemorrhage.
